I'm not sewing costumes

I sew. I like to sew. I've made my children costumes in the past. One year, a fellow mother said to me "I know you want to make their outfits - it's your thing." This mother, whom I don't really like, had a good point. It was my thing. Sewing is my thing. It is my outlet. It helps me keep my sanity. And, heck, I might even make a few dollars from it.

Right then and there I decided, if my children ever wanted me to not make a costume I would listen to them.

As Halloween approached I pitched my idea to my children - we could all dress-up as characters from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I wanted the older one to be a tall Alice and to walk around with a container that had a Drink Me label on it. I wanted my little one to be the short Alice and to walk around with a cake that said Eat Me on it. I would be the Queen of Hearts and my husband could be anyone he wanted from the book - most likely the Mad Hatter. The children flat out refused. I said we could buy costumes. Nope. No way. No how.

My older one is going to be Hermione Granger. She has her cloak, tie, a plastic cauldron to collect candy in, a wand, a lantern and Hedwig. As a surprise I ordered her an hourglass necklace to complete her look.
My little one is going to be a Blue Princess. Her dress lights up.

My husband is going to be Indiana Jones. We spent the day purchasing the majority of his costume (a new leather jacket, shirt, khaki pants - all necessary and wearable again on non-Halloween days).

Me - ummmm - do the devil ears I wore last year count? I called myself a MOMster.

I'm so glad to hear this as I feel like my girls are missing out because I do NOT sew. Now I feel a bit better!:) Lori

Your little blue princess looks adorable! I'm certain your costumes would have been far prettier than the store bought! But at least you can rest from the time pressure.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! Have you considered petticoats? Even if it's more like a slip than a traditional, fuller petticoat, you can make it out of flannel and I find that really helps keep me warm!...I've been wanting to try using flannel backed satin for some slips/petticoats...I think it would be so comfy!

1) my e-mail is vettedirl@yahoo.com if that helps!

2) What types of skirts do you wear? That would help me point you in the right direction! If you have a standard skirt style, you can generally make a slightly shorter, slightly less full "skirt" in the same style for your petticoat/slip...that's what I do for my gored skirts (like in the picture)...and it can also be fun to add a bit of pretty lace at the bottom of one of your petti's so that it peaks out from under your skirts when you're feeling a bit extra girly. :)

Last year I tried to talk everyone into doing Robin Hood--me being Maid Marion, etc. No Way! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm certainly hoping to make no costumes this year, they usually decide the day before and I spend all day sewing!!

I think my kids think of me as a Momster a lot--even without the devil horns!! I usually make the kids costumes, but I will buy a costume if it's not to expensive and not cheaply made. Lately I try to incorporate things they can wear at other times into their costumes. Like a black skirt for Mallory or a turle neck. I'm trying to get more than a one use costume. I can't wait to see pictures of all of you guys!!

You guys sound like more fun than us. I do not dress up and neither does hubby. I love to sew, but I hate sewing costumes (though I'm making 2 this year) and dread it. lol :)

You make me laugh. I, of course, will be going as a Supermomdel - and my husband succumbed to the lure of the costume aisle at Wal Mart to buy the boys Spiderman and Black Spiderman costumes. Anna will be a cowgirl...

Sewing is a great outlet. The costumes were great. I didn't sew for this year either as my daughter changed her mind 8 times.
